Painting and decorating services can be quite expensive for a few reasons. The quality of the materials and paint used can affect the cost, as well as the complexity of the job. An experienced decorator or painter may also charge extra for labour costs due to their expertise.

Additionally, cleaning, repairing and preparation work will all factor into the final cost of painting and decorating services. You should also take in to consideration fuel, insurance and tax expenses that the decorator will have to incur.

Remember they are running a business.

Why Can Painting and Decorating Cost So Much?

How do I Choose a Professional?

Before choosing a professional painter, ask for references and check out their work. Talk to your family, friends, or neighbours who have chosen a professional painter recently to see if they can recommend anyone.

A
sk them about their experience with the contractor, what quality of material and tools were used for the job, and how long it took for the project to be completed.

Always remember to get at least three quotes from different contractors before making a decision so you can compare prices and ensure that you are getting the best value for your money.

Just remember cheap doesn't always mean bad and
expensive doesn't always mean good.

How Long Does It Take To Paint a Room?

Answer: Painting a room can take anywhere from one to several days depending on the size, condition of the walls, and coats and drying times of the paints being used.

Generally speaking, it will take about 6-8 hours for a professional to paint an average size bedroom (12 ft × 12 ft) walls, ceiling and woodwork.

This allows for one coat to the ceiling, two coats for the walls and a light rubbing down of the woodwork before one coat of quality finish gloss or satinwood.

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type and quality of materials used, and labour costs.

Generally speaking, you can expect to pay around £500 plus.
As of 11/2/2023, according to Checkatrade, the average day rate for a painter and decorator across the UK is £270. Meanwhile, HaMuch says the average rate can range between £120 to £400 a day.

How Often Should I Redecorate?

As often as you'd like! Redecorating is a great way to infuse new life into your space.

Depending on your budget and desire to change things up, typically, interior painting projects should last a couple of years before needing a touch up, and exterior painting typically lasts seven to ten years before requiring maintenance.

However, you should absolutely take note of wear and tear and any concerns you have that may affect the integrity of the ceilings, woodwork or interior and exterior walls, as there could be an underlying issue that needs attention, before it becomes a much worse and more costly issue.
